Eunice Courir de
Mardi Gras, Feb.
28, 2006
The new route of the Eunice courir passes by LSUE,
so it seemed appropriate to try to get a few shots about 11:30 a.m. as
the first part of the run advanced past the campus. We had the campus
cordoned off with the ubiquitous yellow tape that people around the area
put up to discourage riders from trampling their lawns. But we couldn't
prevent the visual assault of images like the one shown from the Lost
Bayou Ramblers' lead band wagon: Louis Michot wore a mortar board cap, a
Mardi Gras tradition going back to medieval times intended to mock the
academic pretensions of those of us in higher education. Click on thumbnails to access larger

Mamou Courir de
Mardi Gras, Feb.
28, 2006
These photos were taken about 1 p.m. The
Mamou chicken chasers were relentless. The Mardi Gras dancing on his
horse looks like he might be riding a surfboard. He kept his balance.
Wiping out on asphalt pavement has to hurt even more than being hit by
high surf.
Downtown
Iota, Feb.
28, 2006
These photos were taken right before the Tee-Mamou
Mardi Gras arrived at the Iota Mardi Gras Folklife Festival and during
their initial ride into town. That's Anita Dupre from LSUE's Financial
Aid Office posing at the Catholic Daughters of America booth, which
sells syrup pies (come early for those) and beignets. After the Mardi
Gras ride into town, they dismount from their trailers, walk to the
dance stage, and perform for the crowd. Click thumbnails to access

Downtown
Basile, Feb.
28, 2006
These photos start about 3:15 p.m. right after the
Basile Mardi Gras paraded on foot into downtown Basile, led by Capitaine
Potic Rider (shown in the first photo). The last photo shows
Brandon Moreau on fiddle and Danny Shuff waving his accordion to the
beat of the "Pine Grove Blues." Click thumbnails to access larger

Downtown Eunice, Feb.
28, 2006
These photos start about 4:15 p.m. as the last
trailers from the courir paraded past the Liberty Theater, long after
the horse riders had gone by. Meanwhile,
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys were playing at the main bandstand.
At 6 p.m., Geno Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie drew a more than
capacity crowd to Nick's on 2nd. The dance shots were taken while Geno
was play "The Eunice Two-Step." Click on thumbnails to access larger photos.
